Little Hideaway
From an unfinished empty space above a garage to a children’s bunk room for summer sleepovers with friends, this remodel transformed an empty attic to a place where imagination takes center stage.
Six custom-built bunks where thoughtfully designed to be an escape into a whole new world with themes including Space, Hello Kitty, Under the Sea, a Castle, Trains, and Superheroes.
The room’s sloped ceilings presented a unique design opportunity, leading to the creation of custom millwork and built-in cabinetry that gracefully follows the architecture of the space. This maximizes storage while creating a seamless backdrop that feels as though it has always belonged.
Custom bedding made of natural materials, coordinating wallpaper and paint, playful textiles, whimsical lighting, hand-selected books, treasured toys, and children’s decor transform the room into more than a bunk space. It becomes a storybook brought to life, where every corner promotes curiosity.

Entry
At the homeowner’s request, all fabric throughout the space was made of natural materials, including the pull-out sofa for additional guests at the entrance to the space. Whimsical sconces above are both practical and playful.
Opposite the sofa, a custom built-in library gives the kids a place to house their toys, books, and games. A built-in frame TV was also added, anticipating movie nights together as they grow older. Skylights were added to bring in natural light during the day and nighttime stargazing, giving the tighter space a more open feel.
Bunk 1: Space
The Space bunk transforms bedtime into an out-of-this-world adventure, with every detail designed to make children feel as though they are exploring the galaxy. A solar tube, strategically incorporated into the space to satisfy code requirements for additional natural light, doubles as a spaceship window porthole to gaze at the moon.
Wallpaper with stars in the night sky were added to the ceiling for the children to feel surrounded by the night sky as they drift off to sleep. Glow-in-the-dark sheets and an illuminated planet decor nightlight adds another layer of magic.

Bunk 2: Castle
The “Under the Sea” bunk was designed to feel like an underwater adventure, with the duvet cover representing the soft sand of the shoreline and the sheets bringing the creatures of the sea to life. Seashell decor and a crab nightlight are this bunk’s finishing touches.
Custom linen drapery was added to each bunk, lined with blackout fabric and finished with a beautiful velvet blue tape detail. The drapery allows each bunk to become a cozy, dark retreat for restful sleep while also creating a cohesive design element that ties all six unique themes together.

Bunk 4: Superheroes
The Superhero bunk was designed to make children feel as though they had stepped directly into the pages of their favorite comic books, featuring a bold comic-inspired wallpaper that surrounds the space with energy and excitement. The bedding incorporates beloved superhero characters, and the hand-selected plush toys bring forth a playful, interactive experience.
Here and in the other bunks, the plush toys were custom knit using natural fibers rather than traditional polyester, adding a handcrafted non-sythentic element.
Bunk 5: Hello Kitty
The Hello Kitty bunk was designed around the playful motifs that make the character so beloved, incorporating striped ceiling details inspired by Hello Kitty’s signature clothing and strawberry accents referenced throughout the show. A collection of Hello Kitty storybooks was included to continue exploring the character’s adventures through reading before bedtime.

Bunk 6: Trains
The Trains bunk was designed with personalized details to celebrate the homeowner’s kiddo’s favorite theme, creating a place just for them. Two handmade pieces adorn this bunk, including a hand-knit train and knit pillow with his name.
