Rugs aren’t just something you toss on the floor — they’re upholstery for your home’s largest surface. Much like a sofa, a rug’s fabric, construction, and durability should mirror your lifestyle and how you use the space. The right one can ground your room, add warmth and texture, and even serve as artwork underfoot.
At Sprinkman Design, we love helping clients see the full picture when it comes to rugs. From function to style, we’re here to share guidance that makes choosing the right one feel a little less overwhelming — and a lot more fun.
First, Let’s Talk Construction
When you flip a rug over, you’re looking at its story. That story tells you how it was made — and that’s important.
Hand-Knotted Rugs: The gold standard for rugs. Every knot is tied by hand (yes, really!) and you can see the knots clearly when you turn it over. Hand-knotted rugs deliver the most durable, long-lasting luxury and have the greatest chance of becoming heirlooms. The smaller and tighter the knots, the more expensive the rug, simply because it takes more time to make. These rugs are perfect for homes with pets – cats included – and if damage happens (because life happens), a good rug workshop can often re-knot and repair it. Around here, we call that a win-win.
Loom-Knotted Rugs: These still impart a high quality, but are partially constructed by machine. This makes them more affordable, and slightly thinner. The good news? It means they are easy to slide under doors and feature in high-traffic areas where you still want longevity. If you are a young family, this is a solid choice for your home.

Tufted Rugs: This type of rug highlights a design punched into fabric and glued down with a backing. Tufted rugs are definitely more budget-friendly, but you’ll start to see wear after 8-10 years when the glue backing begins to break down. These can be an excellent in-between option, especially if you’re layering pieces.
Hand-Woven Rugs: Similar to tufted in cost and feel, these are typically less expensive and can work beautifully when you want texture without a heavy pattern.

Fabric: What’s It Made Of?
Take it from us, the material of your rug is just as important as the build. Much like a well-crafted recipe, the quality of a rug’s ‘ingredients’ should not be overlooked.
Wool Rugs: Wool rugs are our favorite for softness, durability, and natural stain resistance. This is thanks to the lanolin that is present in the wool. Merino wool is especially luxe and wool mixed with nylon is especially durable. When perusing wool rugs, you’ll notice a direct connection between its length of string and softness quotient. Fun fact: the longer the string, the more lanolin — and the softer the wool.
Rayon/Viscose Rugs: Rayon rugs have a gorgeous shimmer, but are extremely fragile. Likewise, viscose rugs – made from plant pulp – actually behave more like paper than textile. As such, water will permanently change the texture. Avoid these if you have kids, pets, or wine nights. Trust us on this one.
Polyester Rugs: Tough, affordable, and easy to clean. These rugs will last forever, but over the years you’ll see traffic patterns develop as they tend to mat over time. That said, they’re a great starting point for young families.
Jute Rugs: Beautiful, earthy texture, but beware — jute absorbs everything. This means spills, pet accidents or dark footprints from mud-caked shoes are there for good.
Sprinkman Design-Approved Pro Tips
We live and breathe this stuff, so here are some insider tips we always share with clients:
- Rotate your rug once a year to avoid uneven fading. Sunlight is one of a rug’s biggest enemies.
- Avoid vacuum beater bars. Think of your rug like a cashmere sweater — gentle care only!
- Indents from furniture? Ice cubes do the trick! Place them on the dent, let them melt, and the fibers will slowly rise again.
- Wonky corners or edges? Lay it out in the sun or on hot asphalt for just a few hours. Consider it a well-deserved spa day for your rug.
- If your dream rug is a stretch price-wise, layering is your friend. Get a smaller showstopper and place it over a larger, less expensive base rug. It adds texture, fills space, and looks like you meant it (because you did).

When You’re Ready to Order
At Sprinkman Design, we partner with trusted vendors for quick-ship options, luxe textures, and endless fabric choices. Rugs, pillows, even custom lampshades and furniture — it can all come together using our expansive list of go-tos for ordering and design sourcing.
Whether you’re layering for comfort, defining a space, or adding a pop of personality, we’ll guide you toward the right materials, sizes, and styles that work with the rhythm of your day-to-day. Need a coordinating rug for a tricky space? We’ve got you. We can help pull pieces that work together without overdoing the pattern play. Why? Because not every rug in a house needs to be a statement piece. Sometimes you just need one, with thoughtful complements around it.
At the end of the day, rugs are more than something soft to stand on. They’re one of the hardest-working pieces in your home. And just like we wouldn’t put delicate fabric on a high-use sofa, we’re here to help you choose rugs that are right for your space, people and lifestyle — and feel just as intentional as the rest of your home.
